Sophia Flörsch joins the Alpine Formula 1 team as a junior driver

Junior driver Sophia Flörsch will join the junior program of the F1 racing team Alpine in 2023. An announcement at the car launch.

Flörsch will compete in this year’s FIA Formula 3 comeback in Alpine’s colors. The up-and-coming driver from Munich was offered a cockpit with the newly formed PHM Racing by the Charouz team after most recently spending two years in endurance racing as well as the DTM. Flörsch new to the Alpine junior program

The only woman in the 30-strong FIA Formula 3 grid joins Alpine’s revamped junior program this year. Academy and previous partner drivers will be merged in 2023 to create synergies within the Alpine Group: In addition to Formula 1, the French are also involved in endurance racing, and from 2024 an LMDh program is planned for entries in the World Sports Car Championship (WEC) and the U.S. IMSA.

In addition to Flörsch, this year’s Alpine youngsters include Jack Doohan, the son of MotoGP icon Mick Doohan, and Victor Martins. Both will be competing in FIA Formula 2 in 2023, the direct substructure to Formula 1, in which Flörsch’s new team PHM Racing is also involved.

Flörsch: Team best time at Formula 3 test

Flörsch is also the first female driver at Alpine to take part in the new and so-called ‘RAC(H)er’ program, which aims to promote equal opportunities in the automotive industry and motorsport.

This week, Flörsch prepared with PHM Racing by Charouz and her teammates Roberto Faria and Piotr Wisnicki at the official Formula 3 tests in Bahrain for the soon to follow the start of the season (March 03 to 05) at the same location. On the second day of the three-day test, Flörsch set the best time for her team in 1:48.322 minutes, ranking at the back of the results lists.

Flörsch contested her last FIA Formula 3 race to date in September 2020 at Mugello. At the time, she failed to score any points in her F3 debut season with Campos Racing. In 2021, she competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans (retirement) for the second year in a row with the Richard Mille Racing Team, made her DTM debut with Audi customer team Abt Sportsline and immediately clinched a podium finish in the LMP2 guest race in the European Le Mans Series.
